This course is the core module for the first trimester of the International Political Economy MA/MSc. The course covers both theoretical and thematic topics in the field from the perspective of the "American" school. Thematic issues include the politics of trade and money, globalisation, regionalisation, financial crisis, and the politics of the illicit global economy. The module considers the historical evolution of international economic governance, before turning to contemporary issues including the rise of the BRICS countries, Brexit, Trump and the remergence of economic nationalism.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should:have gained advanced knowledge both the theoretical and thematic topics of international political economy. Individually, the student are assessed based on an original research design on an IPE topic of the student's choosing. This assessment developes research and writing skills, as well as promoting an in-depth knoweldge of a contemporary IPE issue. The students are then also assessed via a group project with culminates in an in-class simulation exercise of a contemporary IPE negotiation. This exercise is meant to give students insight and understanding into the mechanism, substance and process of international economic politics. Students should be able to converse and engage in the contemporary debate regarding the governance structures of the international economy.
