POL30590 The Political Economy of the European Union

Academic Year 2019/2020

This module provides an overview of key isssues in the political economy of the European Union (EU), emphasising their historical evolution and their current status. These issues include:
- intellectual influences on the political economy of the EU, with particular reference to the German economic philosophy of ordoliberalism;
- the moulding of Economic and Monetray Union (EMU), the challenges to EMU arising from the recent financial crisis, and respones to those challenges, including the adoption of the Fiscal Treaty and other measures;
- the conduct of external ecopnomic relations by the EU, such as the negotiation of Economic Partnetrship Agreements with African and other countries, and the proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership with the USA;
- challenges to the current model of EU economic governance (both internal and external), covering both Left-wing (e.g., Syriza, briefly, in Greece) and Right-wing (e.g., Brexit in the UK, Orban in Hungary, and others) types of resistance;
- prospects for European integration in the light of the above histories, developments and challenges.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the module, students will be:
- able to place current developments in European political economy in historical perspective;
- and have a better understanding of the rationales for, and resistances to, existing economic governance models.
