PLAN20020 Introduction to GIS

Academic Year 2023/2024

This module will introduce students to the basic concepts and organisation of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and associated technology. A comprehensive overview of GIS technology is provided including data capture, data analysis, data presentation and representation within a GIS framework. Emphasis is placed on the application of GIS technology to assist in problem investigation and as a decision support tool for planning.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of the module students should be able to:
1. Understand the basic concepts associated with GIS
2. Understand the basic working of GIS technology
3. Input, analyse and present basic data within a GIS software package
4. Apply GIS technology to investigate and/or address issues in public policy and planning
