PHTY41130 Advancing Cardiorespiratory Theory and Practice

Academic Year 2023/2024

This module builds on students’ foundational knowledge of cardiorespiratory anatomy, physiology and assessment and management of the cardiorespiratory patient.
This module covers pathological conditions of the paediatric and adult respiratory system and adult surgical, cardiac, vascular, oncology and metabolic disease. Physiotherapy assessment and management of the critical care (ICU) patient is covered in this module including the pathophysiology of sepsis, ARDS, Covid-19 and multi-organ failure. The student will be also introduced to the assessment and management of the paediatric patient in the neonatal unit.
Along with acquisition of assessment, management and practical skills (suction, Manual and ventilator hyperinflation, Tracheostomy care), the module will include critical appraisal of the current literature, advanced clinical reasoning and advanced understanding of the role of the multi-disciplinary team, with an emphasis on evidence-based management of cardiorespiratory disease. The module will also explore the role of exercise and physical activity in the management and prevention of chronic cardiorespiratory disease. The module will include cardiorespiratory pharmacology. The module will include case-study based clinical reasoning sessions using the International Classification of Function, Disability and Health (ICF) as a framework to show students how to assess patients and plan treatment accordingly, setting SMART short and long term goals; use outcome measures to assess effectiveness of treatment; modify treatment if necessary and know when referral to another discipline is necessary.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the module, students should be able to:

1. Comprehensively relate pathologies of the cardiorespiratory system and principles of cardiorespiratory physiotherapy to the clinical presentations of cardiorespiratory conditions in paediatric and adult populations where relevant.
2. Perform a competent and safe assessment of the critical care patient including the interpretation of ventilatory modes and basic medical investigations that relate to the critical care setting.
3. Evaluate assessment findings to plan safe and effective treatments including goal setting, appropriate outcome measure selection, appropriate referral to members of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) and employing advanced clinical reasoning skills using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health framework.
4. Administer cardiorespiratory techniques effectively to ensure safe and competent practice including manual hyperinflation, nasopharyngeal suction, oropharyngeal suction and tracheostomy management.
5. Understand the role of exercise in the management and prevention of chronic cardiorespiratory disease, demonstrating competence and safety in exercise testing and prescription for individuals with cardiorespiratory disease, including cardiac rehabilitation, amputee rehabilitation, end stage renal disease, cancer and diabetes.
6. Appraise best available evidence for the management of cardiorespiratory disease and apply key findings to enable safe and effective cardiorespiratory physiotherapy practice across a variety of clinical environments.
