PHTY41020 Physio Clinical Specialties

This level 4 module is designed to integrate and advance students’ knowledge relating to specialist areas of physiotherapy practice.
This module builds on previous modules throughout the programme to enhance students’ knowledge of complex patient presentations, their ability to critically evaluate current evidence, and develop holistic, comprehensive strategic patient management plans.
Specialist topics covered include:

• Sports Physiotherapy: Advancing knowledge and practice of evidence based practice in sports physiotherapy, function specific exercise, soft tissue and joint treatment, foot and ankle pathomechanics and sports specific taping. Students will learn the how to work/communicate within a multidisciplinary sports team setting.
• Paediatric physiotherapy: the role of physiotherapy in neonatal care, early childhood intervention, haematology and oncology, orthopaedics, obesity, DCD and dyspraxia, physical and intellectual disability
• Women and men’s health: the role of physiotherapy in antenatal and postnatal care, pelvic floor dysfunction, pelvic girdle pain and incontinence management.
• Dermatology and wound care: the role of physiotherapy in wound management, lymphoedema, burns
• Occupational physiotherapy and ergonomics.
• Connected Health: The emerging role of the physiotherapist in health technology

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an advanced and detailed knowledge of current evidence based physiotherapy practice in the specialties of sports physiotherapy, women's and men's health, paediatrics, dermatology and wound management, occupational physiotherapy and ergonomics and health technology
2. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the role of the physiotherapist in these specialist areas within the multidisciplinary context in different healthcare and sports environments and the varying challenges of diversity in gender, culture and disability.
3. Discuss and justify comprehensive physiotherapy management strategies for these specialties with an emphasis on evidence-based practice.
4. Review and critically analyze current literature in the above specialties in a self-directed and autonomous manner.
5. Demonstrate the ability to synthesize and communicate evidence-based health messages to patients, coaches, carers, colleagues and/or other stakeholders.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module is made up of a mixed teaching and learning approach including face to face lectures, case scenarios, clinical reasoning video session, practical skills, “patients as educators sessions”, and group/peer feedback and review sessions.
