PHTY40670 Physiotherapy Clin Ed VII

Academic Year 2020/2021

This module builds on learning outcomes achieved in earlier stages of the programme and prepares the student for autonomous practice as a Chartered Physiotherapist upon graduation. As the final Practice Education placement students should, by the end of this module, have demonstrated skills and knowledge to be safe, effective and autonomous practitioners. Students are placed in a variety of settings from acute to community and are given a caseload of patients/clients to assess and treat/manage under the direction of a Practice Tutor/Educator. Age range of patients/clients varies from paediatrics to elderly. Core clinical areas are musculoskeletal, respiratory and neurology. Both public and private sector placement sites are offered. In line with Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists guidelines, each student completes a Physiotherapy Undergraduate Learning Portfolio during each placement block, comprising: Objectives, Clinical Log, Planned Learning Events, Unplanned Learning Events, Evidence-Based Clinical Reasoning Form, Reflective Diary. The Clinical Assessment Form used for CE7 is Level 3, meaning competence in all five areas (including caseload management/prioritisation) is required, without guidance, but under the supervision (direct or indirect) of a Practice Tutor/Educator.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Throughout the practice placement teaching and learning occurs on the clinical site with face to face patient interactions and inter-professional interactions with Physiotherapists and other members of the multi-disciplinary team. Teaching may occur one to one or in groups. Evidence informed case based discussions, tutorials, peer learning and presentations are often used as methods of teaching and learning.
The Physiotherapy Undergraduate Learning Portfolios provides the opportunity for students to submit written reflection on their placement and the evidence based clinical reasoning form affords students the opportunity to demonstrate their problem solving approach to clinical decision making through the application of evidence based practice on a specific patient encounter.
