Sports and Exercise medicine (SEM) encompasses two different but related topics, namely sports medicine and exercise medicine. Sports Medicine involves the prevention, diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal disorders and medical issues related to exercise, while exercise medicine aims to use physical activity to prevent and treat chronic diseases (World Health Organisation 2013). In keeping with this definition, this module will introduce students to the speciality of SEM. It aims to facilitate student understanding of the important health benefits of exercise and physical activity, fundamentals of exercise screening and prescription introduces the concept of sports medicine. Core content includes: epidemiology of physical activity; exercise physiology, exercise testing and prescription, strategies for promoting exercise, sports injury aetiology, clinical presentations and a multidisciplinary approach to sports injury management.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students should have a basic understanding of the:
♣ benefits of physical activity on health and psychological well-being
♣ fundamentals of exercise screening, testing and prescription for healthy and clinical populations
♣ strategies to increase physical activity and exercise
♣ most common injuries related to exercise and sports
♣ role of the multidisciplinary team in the management of sports related injury
