PHTY30010 Physiotherapy Clinical Education III

Academic Year 2020/2021

This module for BSc Physiotherapy students comprises a supervised clinical education placement. Placements will be in a variety of settings from acute hospitals, community settings and remotely via telehealth. Students are given a caseload of patients/clients to assess and treat/manage under the direction of a Practice Tutor/Educator. Age range of patients/clients varies from paediatrics to elderly. Core clinical areas are musculoskeletal, respiratory and neurology. Both public and private sector placement sites are offered. Prior to placement, students must have completed UCD Student Health Screening and Vaccination schedule. They must also have Garda Clearance, and completed manual handling and CPR/First Aid certificates. In addition, they are required to submit HSE certificates in Hand Hygiene, Children First and Data Protection. In line with Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists guidelines, each student completes a Physiotherapy Undergraduate Learning Portfolio during each placement block, comprising: Objectives, Clinical Log, Planned Learning Events, Unplanned Learning Events, Evidence-Based Clinical Reasoning Form, Reflective Diary. The Clinical Assessment Form used for CE3 is Level 1, meaning competence in all five areas (Assessment, Treatment, Professionalism, Communication and Documentation) with guidance, is required.
The clinical placement is followed by 20 hours of small-group-learning activities in UCD. Small-group-learning will include activities relating to impact of culture, civil status, religion, age, disability and race on health beliefs with particular reference to the travelling community. In line with the National Undergraduate Curriculum for Chronic Disease Prevention and Management, students will be required to document examples of behaviour change intervention they instigated in their previous clinical placement. During this, students will be introduced to policies and systems to protect the health, safety, welfare, equality and dignity of service users, staff and volunteers, eg HSE policy on Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults .

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Throughout the practice placement teaching and learning occurs on the clinical site with face to face patient interactions and inter-professional interactions with Physiotherapists and other members of the multi-disciplinary team. Teaching may occur one to one or in groups. Evidence informed case based discussions, tutorials, peer learning and presentations are often used as methods of teaching and learning.
The Physiotherapy Undergraduate Learning Portfolios provides the opportunity for students to submit written reflection on their placement and the evidence based clinical reasoning form affords students the opportunity to demonstrate their problem solving approach to clinical decision making through the application of evidence based practice on a specific patient encounter.
