PHTY10150 Personal Training in Physiothe

Academic Year 2020/2021

Co-requisites
This module will be completed alongside the co-requisite of Applied Exercise Science PHTY10140

Module Rationale:

Exercise prescription is a fundamental competency for Physiotherapists and while this is represented in the core BSc Physiotherapy curriculum, opportunities to design and evaluate tailored programmes of exercise training for the general public in a sport and fitness setting remain limited. This module aims to provide students with the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge into practice. This will include health screening, physical fitness assessment, exercise programme design, prescription, progression and evaluation in the context of personal training and coaching of clients from the general public for promotion of health and fitness.

Indicative Module Description:
This module builds on prior knowledge of human structure and function to equip students with the knowledge and skills to fulfil the basic role of a personal trainer. This includes screening and collection of client information; assessment of individual client need; design, implementation and evaluation of exercise/physical activity programmes for a range of individual clients; and evaluation of suitable interventions in the context of the health and fitness industry.

Students will gain the knowledge and understanding of the principles that underpin personal training and the basic skills that would enable their recognition as a registered exercise professional in Ireland.

Indicative Module Topics :

Health and multidimensional fitness assessment
Aerobic training and programme design
Resistance training and programme design
Training adaptations, and exercise planning and programming
Evaluation of training response and progression
Nutrition and sport
Psycho-social aspects of health and fitness
Role of the personal trainer and health promotion

Indicative Core Texts:
American College of Sports Medicine (2017). ACSM’s Resources for the Personal Trainer 4th of 5th edition.

Specific readings will be assigned during each lecture and made available in the VLE. Students will be expected and guided to undertake additional, supplementary reading in their own independent study time.
