PHIL30670 Practical Philosophy: Work Experience

Academic Year 2020/2021

This module consists of dedicated practical training that enables Philosophy students to engage in practical experience beyond the University, including facilitating philosophical learning with children and gaining experience in event management and organisation of a Philosophy events. After completing practical training, students will be given a work placement to facilitate sessions that creatively engage children in philosophical thinking. Particpants will be supported throughout in developing ideas and plans for facilitating philosophy sessions. During their work placement, students will also write a reflexive overview of their experience and how it relates to more general philosophical themes and issues.

Please note: Students must apply to undertake this module. Attendance during training and the work placement is mandatory. The training and placement includes of two parts: (1) training in a specific pedagogy to facilitate philosophy beyond university settings; (2) professional development in a work placement and assisting with philosophy events for school-age students.

Learning Outcomes:

At the completion of this module students will:
> develop key philosophical skills and training and be able to apply these to a broad range of contexts;
> become familiar with appropriate philosophical pedagogies and facilitation skills;
> develop their oral and written skills to be able to communicate clearly and confidently both in oral and written skills;
> be familiar with appropriate philosophical pedagogy and faciliation skills;
> plan and facilitate philosophy seminars and discussons;
> collaborate with peers and professionals in a range of settings;
> reflect on their experience in a structured and consistent manner;
> develop leadership and organizational skills;
> participate in disucssion forums with peers;
> obtain event organization and management skills.

Indicative Module Content:
