PHAR40070 Advanced Neuropharmacology:Cognition, Neurodegeneration and Psychiatric Disorders

This module covers advanced topics in the cognition, neurodegeneration and psychiatric illness. Topics covered will include neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia. The module will focus on novel therapeutic strategies under development in these disease states. In addition, the pharmacological manipulation of cognitive functions such as memory and learning will be discussed. This module forms part of the core Stage 4 Pharmacology course. It is strongly recommended that students have taken PHAR30080 and PHAR30040, or other modules with similar learning outcomes.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Critically evaluate recent research findings in neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases;
2. Discuss existing and novel therapeutic approaches to neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases;
3. Discuss cognitive function and critically evaluate the mechanisms of action of cognition modulating drugs.
