PEP40050 Placemaking: Urban and Rural Design

This module seeks to develop the prospective planner’s understanding of the key role that design can play in creating and managing the physical and spatial environment, its potential to enhance the quality of life of its inhabitants, and to deliver more sustainable and resilient places. More specifically, it introduces key concepts and theory in urban design and design in the rural environment within the context of the spatial planning framework and its associated practices and processes. The module also aims to familiarise students with the role of different disciplines involved in the design, development and management of the physical and spatial environment.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this module, the student will:
• Be aware of key concepts and theory in urban design and design in rural environments.
• Have a sufficient understanding of the typical principles and objectives of urban design and design in the rural environment to work and converse comfortably with practitioners in other design professions, towards the achievement of good urban design and spatial planning.
• Understand the relationship between form and function in the design of the built environment.
• Be able to recognise the characteristics of good urban and rural built form and space and be able to distinguish between good and poor built form and space.
• Understand the role of spatial planning in the management of urban design and design in the rural environment.
