PATH10020 Basic Principles of Cell Biolo

Academic Year 2020/2021

This is a foundation module forming part of the core curriculum for Stage 1 Medicine students, Biomedical Health and Life Science students and also Stage 1 Human Nutrition students. This module is designed to give students an overview of how cells work, exploring the different cellular organelles, the structure and function of nucleic acids and proteins, cell cycle and cell death, cell communication and signalling pathways relevant to disease. Basic principles of cellular immunology will also be introduced.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
Describe the basic structure and function of the human cell and display an understanding of the fundamental components of a mammalian cell.
Describe the basic structure and functions of nucleic acid and demonstrate how alterations in DNA sequence cause disease.
Demonstrate an understanding of protein structure and post-translational modifications.
Discuss the intra- and extra-cellular signalling mechanisms of a cell and understand the implication of cell signalling in disease.
Explain cell division, cell cycle and cell death and it's involvement in disease.
Review the fundamentals of cellular immunology.
