OSH40160 Environmental Leg and Regs

Academic Year 2019/2020

This module will address the Irish and EU legislation system relating to the environment. The module will focus on key legislation relating particularly to environmental protection and climate change at Irish and European level with reference to regulatory guidance this area. Information on international conventions and treaties will be covered.

Student learning will take place through blended learning practices. E-Lectures will be delivered over an 8-week period (approximately 2 to 3 hours per week) through the online learning environment and will be supplemented by two half day workshops (conversation classes) at UCD. A moderated discussion board will be used to allow module participants to discuss the e-lecture content.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students will:

1. Have acquired knowledge of the requirements of environmental legislation, regulation and policy relevant to Ireland and the EU discussed in the module.

2. Have sufficient knowledge to advise management on compliance with the requirement of key legislation, regulation and policy.

3. Be critically aware of the importance of understanding, development and implementation of environmental legislation, particularly regarding climate change, human health and environmental protection.

Introduction to National, European and International Law and Accords
Major environmental directives and their accompanying national legislation through Acts and Regulations
Environment and hazard specific legislation e.g. water related legislation
Strategies for international issues with legal ramifications e.g. climate change
