NMHS43880 Applied Research Evidence Translation

As part of their professional role, practitioners are expected to demonstrate a range of practice competencies. Clinicians are expected to be competent in the following domains: evidence-based practice, quality improvement processes, implementation strategies and collaborative practice. For non-clinicians, such as service managers, leaders and educators, competencies are specific to the role that they perform and include competencies for knowledge translation in their field of practice. All practitioners prepared to master’s level are expected to be capable of finding and critiquing research evidence for their field of practice and, where warranted, applying that evidence through practice change. This module provides students with learning experiences that aim to develop and enhance these capabilities.
The focus of the module is on the theory and method of evidence translation, including translation frameworks that are used in research and practice. The module reviews selected research methodologies, and examines evidence translation frameworks, including implementation science frameworks and action research methodologies.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the module, the student will be able to:
1. Define evidence translation and discuss the various methods used to translate research and other evidence into practice
2. Evaluate selected scientific frameworks for evidence translation and practice change, including their methodological assumptions and practical application
3. Discuss the tenets of implementation science and justify its application in evidence translation
4. Discuss the tenets of action research and justify its application in evidence translation

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
While a student-centred approaches is favoured in terms of learning, there is considerable belief and emphasis in the SNMHS that students need considerable direction while this new module is first being presented. Therefore a modified lecture approach is adopted with opportunities for the students to select his/her own topic area and group and peer learning will form an essential part of these face to face sessions.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

In relation to the first assessment - written feedback will be given individually to students as well as whole class feedback. In relation to the self assessment, peer assessment and lecturer feedback will be provided during classes. A necessary component of this assessment is to have student participation in the class. In relation to the final written critique, written feedback forms will be completed and made available to the students on request post completion of the module.
