The aim of this module is to improve the nurse’s knowledge and competency to use evidence based holistic care for the patient with liver disease across the life span.
This module is designed to provide students with the theoretical foundation for holistic nursing practice within this patient cohort. The module will facilitate students' understanding of the principles of systematic patient assessment; implementation of patient-specific care planning in liver diseases; nutrition, medications, and complications of liver disease; diagnostic and treatment modalities; patient and family education. The student's ability to manage patients with common liver diseases will be enhanced. The module also enables the student’s understanding of the concepts of practice within their specialist role. At the end of this module, the student will be able to discuss their role in regards to patient safety, professional accountability and the need for accurate communication with all members of the multidisciplinary team, patients and their families.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the module the student should be able to achieve the following:
• Critically explore the aetiology and pathophysiology of liver disease, across the patient’s life spectrum
• Demonstrate the ability to carry out a comprehensive health assessment of a patient presenting to a hepatology service
• Utilise nursing theory and evidence based practice to critically analyse the nursing management of a patient across the spectrum of liver diseases:
• Appraises changes in the patient's condition, analysing the relationship between the condition change and interventions and/or treatments received across the life span.
