The module is designed to develop in students a critical approach to research design and an understanding of research processes. Content includes: project planning and project management; research governance; ethical principles in research conduct; populations, samples and sampling; data gathering and analysis, researcher roles, explanatory and descriptive designs, causal and prognostic designs, scientific rigour.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of the module, with reference to his/her clinical specialism, the student should be able to:
1. Discuss the normative procedures, practices and conventions associated with both qualitative and quantitative research.
2. Apply ethics principles in the design of the study, the negotiation of access, and the recruitment of participants.
3. Demonstrate a sound grasp of quantitative and qualitative approaches to research, including sample selection, data gathering, and data analysis.
