On completion of this module, students should be able to:
Apply prior knowledge of pathophysiology in the assessment of the acutely ill child.
Adopt a systematic approach to the nursing assessment and care of the child and his/her family.
Initiate an evidence-based plan-of-care for the acutely ill child.
Identify and initiate appropriate treatment modalities for the acutely ill child. Identify and discuss monitoring and diagnostic care in the Children's ED environment and relate this to the individual nurse's level of responsibility and accountability.
Demonstrate a keen awareness of the importance of psychosocial factors in caring for the acutely ill child and his/her family.
This module aims to increase the children’s emergency nurse’s knowledge of the optimal care of the baby/infant/child/adolescent presenting with a wide range of illnesses - varying from a minor illness, to a major, life-threatening condition;
This module focuses on the role of the children’s emergency nurse in care of the child with an acute alteration in function of the cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal, endocrine, or neurological systems;
The clinical component is designed to provide the student with clinical learning opportunities to develop essential skills in caring for the acutely ill child and his/her family, and to optimize this care through the application of relevant theory to practice;
The principles of best, evidence-based practice and multidisciplinary team working are actively promoted
