The aim of this module is to examine a range of current issues related to the care of persons with chronic illness including cancers and the nursing of adults requiring palliative care.
This module will also offer an appreciation complex care and chronic disease and its implications, which will included long term illness, living with a tracheostomy.

Learning Outcomes:

Indicative Learning Outcomes: On completion: the student will be able to
• Discuss the pathophysiological processes and consequences of impaired haematological function and cell growth
• Explain the common findings of a health assessment of a person with anaemia and/or cancer including diagnostic testing
• Discuss the common psychosocial and spiritual effects experienced by a cancer patient and their family
• Demonstrate diagnostic reasoning and care planning skills using NANDA, NIC and NOC
• Discuss the role of the nurse in identifying and reducing risk factors, anticipating potential complications and promotion of healthy life style in patients with cancer
• Apply the principles of palliative care to the care of the adult with complex needs
• Discuss the range and types of palliative care services available in Ireland.
• Demonstrate an understanding of a palliative care approach to managing complex care needs
• Demonstrate an understanding of a palliative care approach to end of life care, grief and loss.
Demonstrate and appreciation of complex care, chronic disease and its implications.
