The purpose of this module is to facilitate students to develop their knowledge and understanding of health care and social issues that children and their families experience in the community setting. This module will assist students to engage in group work and to facilitate lectures to learn about the role of the PHN, the Nurture Programme, Early Intervention services, Models of Care delivery, palliative care at home, transitioning in and between health and wellbeing services and covering pertinent topics including obesity, child protection, children’s rights, accidents and poisoning and dermatological conditions. This module also explores community care, social care and the overall organisation of child health services.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Critically discuss the community services for infants, children and young people in relation to their health and wellbeing 

2. Explore and evaluate the current system of community services and supports

3. Demonstrate a synthesis of knowledge and skills coherent with best practice and the application of evidence based community interventions with infants, children, young people and their families with regards to health and wellbeing interventions 

4. Investigate and explain the role of the community children’s health nurse in promoting health and wellbeing when working with infants, children, young people and their families who have complex care needs
5. Analyse children’s rights as they pertain to health care.
6. Discuss the role of the children’s nurse in relation meeting the holistic needs of the child and his/her family, including siblings, for children who require palliative and end of life care.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
