NMHS33460 Pop Hlth Diversity & Research

Academic Year 2023/2024

The overarching framework of this module is Population Health, with Diversity and Research concepts being explored and applied within the framework. Population Health focuses on the interrelated conditions and factors that influence health and wellbeing patterns and outcomes for populations. It also incorporates the policies and interventions that impact on achieving equitable health and wellbeing for diverse populations. Diversity explores the existence of variations in people and groups and incorporates cultural competence and characteristics such as cultural background, ethnicity, gender, age, sexuality, values and religion. Speakers from exemplar diverse population groups provide guest lectures and 'insider' perspectives. Exemplar organisations that provide guidance and support to diverse populations provide exemplar of services available. The module is assessed by a team presentation of a plan for an initiative to address an identified population's health and wellbeing need. It requires synthesising principles of population health and diversity and critiquing research related to their chosen initiative. Students also self-reflect and critique personal biases and prejudices that impact on providing professional compassionate care and services to diverse population groups.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The content focuses on population health, with diversity and research concepts integrated. Learning material (theoretical frameworks, information and resources) will be presented through face to face lectures or online live lecturers. Students will also be required to complete directed online activities. Students get an opportunity to meet people from diverse population groups to get insider views and ask people about their experiences and perspectives. They also get an opportunity to meet people who provide services to diverse population groups.
The assessment requires students to work in small teams of 4-5 to construct a plan for an initiative for a specified population group. It will required the application of the concepts taught in the module. During the process of constructing the plan for the initiative Lecturers provide small group work facilitation where they are available to the student teams to support them in their application of theory to their assessment task.
