Academic Year 2023/2024

This module aims to introduce students to specialist care settings in children's nursing, permitting them to observe and participate in the care of children in the following settings: Operating Theatre, Maternity Care, Intellectual Disability and Community. This module will assist students to develop an understanding of how nursing care is planned, organised, delivered and evaluated in these specific clinical settings. Students will have the opportunity to integrate their knowledge and practice of the care of children whilst under the close supervision of the registered nurse.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module in one or more placements in Operation Theater*, Maternity Care*, Intellectual Disability* and Community Care*, students will be able to demonstrate the development of competence in the following domains:
Professional Values and conduct of the nurse competences in a specialist setting
Nursing Practice and clinical decision making competences in a specialist setting
Interpersonal Relationships with patients, family and other professionals
Knowledge and cognitive competences
Management and team competences
Leadership potential and professional scholarship competences (* conditions apply)

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Key teaching and learning approaches used in the module may include: active/task-based learning; peer/multidisciplinary team learning, reflective learning; learning during the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care for children and their families and case-based learning.

Feedback on clinical performance during the placement will be given to the student by the Preceptor, Co-preceptor, Clinical Nurse Manager/Facilitator and Clinical Coordinator of the programme.
