This module pertains to international students at level 3 or 4. It aims to enhance students’ knowledge of mental health and illness, to foster development of collaborative practice with service users and to contribute to ethical, professional responsibility and high quality practice based on values of respect for service users, their dignity, autonomy, beliefs and rights.
Purpose: To provide an accessible, practical and memorable overview of mental health and mental illness from an Irish, including some reference to cultural/ethnic considerations, and international perspective. To critically explore factors that maintain wellness and contribute to illness. To review a range of mental illness presentations and the nursing interventions / treatments available, both interpersonal and pharmacological, in the light of collaborative, recovery and strengths based approaches.
Focus: Mental health as a continuum, on being human & compassionate, nursing knowledge of mental illness and interventions and nursing skills essential to mental health care including communication, empathy building and therapeutic presence. The module includes seminars on self-care and compasion fatigue.
Key features: Class interaction, emphasis on group work, directed and collaborative learning, tutorials; in addition to lectures by key note speakers/ experts in the clinical field.
Assessment: is by written assignment, multiple choice questionnaire (MCQ) and class presentation

Learning Outcomes:

On completion the student will able to:
1. Critically debate mental health and illness and the factors that aid maintenance of positive mental health / mental wellness
2. Appraise the concepts of Recovery and stigma in relation to mental health collaborative care
3. Critique conceptions of acute mental illness, personality disorders, addiction and the therapeutic interventions used in nursing and within multidisciplinary teams
4. Formulate caring, evidence based, analytical care plans highlighting interventions and interpersonal skills essential to professional nursing to facilitate Recovery
