This module will address some of the issues that nurses must be cognisant of in caring for children, adolescents, and older people with mental health problems. Emerging and early adult cognitive, psychological and emotional development is considered.
This module explores the different and specific needs of children, adolescents, and older people in their experience of mental illness and how this differs to the general adult population.
This module will encourage the student to think about children, adolescents and older people in the context of the systems in which they function and the challenges their respective ages pose in terms of their vulnerabilities. This module will explain how these vulnerable groups may be exploited and the special considerations required when caring for them.

Indicative learning outcomes:
The student will demonstrate an ability to discuss the concepts of child development and ageing and how developmental problems may manifest as mental illness
The student will demonstrate an ability to discuss and critically appraise the concept of dependency and the different challenges which may effect children and older people in contrasting ways
The student will demonstrate an ability to critique the relevant policy documents that pertain to the care and management of both these vulnerable groups.
The student will have an awareness of the contemporary issues which impact on both children and older people and how the therapeutic relationship in both groups are of vital importance
