NMHS30610 Psychiatric Nursing (Acute Mental Illness)

The purpose of this module is to advance students' understanding of the concept of acute mental healthcare. The focus of this module will be on the care and treatments available within inpatient and community services for those experiencing an acute form of a mental health difficulty. New approaches in acute mental health will be explored from an interdisciplinary perspective. Students will also become more familar with mental health difficulties such as affective disorders, personality vulnerability and psychoses. Clinical skills work will focus on the skills required to care for someone experiencing an acute mental health difficulty.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students should be able to
*Identify how people accessing acute mental healthcare services might present
*Describe and analysize the structure of acute mental healthcare services
*Critically explore the role of the mental health nurse in caring for someone with an acute mental illness
*Demonstrate the skills required to assess and plan care for someone who is receiving acute mental healthcare
*Debate the merits and demerits of care in acute mental health settings and examine opportunities for improvement.
