This module aims to introduce the student to the nursing management, and theory underpinning the care, of persons experiencing altered health, related to altered function in a number of the principle somatic systems including the renal system, the alimentary and hepato-biliary systems.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
Discuss the relevant aspects of a nursing assessment of persons experiencing altered renal, gastro-intestinal, and hepato-biliary function.
Identify, prioritise, and critically discuss relevant aspects of problem identification, nursing diagnosis with reference to persons experiencing altered renal, gastro-intestinal, and hepato-biliary function.
Critically discuss relevant aspects of planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care with reference to persons experiencing altered renal, gastro-intestinal, and hepato-biliary function.
Discuss the importance of therapeutic relationship, psychological and educational needs, and social factors which may impact the needs of persons with altered renal, gastro-intestinal, and hepato-biliary function.

Indicative Module Content:

The module comprises three areas of nursing relating to:
Nursing the patient with altered Renal Function.
Nursing the patient with altered Gastro-intestinal Function.
Nursing the patient with altered Hepato-biliary Function.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Substantive content is delivered online with content scheduled each week during the trimester. Lectures are delivered in either synchronous or asynchronous manner. Students have the opportunity to attend online skills sessions.
