NMHS30020 Nursing in Diverse Settings

The aim of this module is to examine a range of current issues related to the care of persons with cancers, the care of the dying, nursing in chronic illness and disability. The principles of rehabilitation and the role of palliative care in the care of persons experiencing a chronic illness or a terminal illness are considered. The module is presented in four units of study, as follows: Unit 1: nursing the patient with chronic illness, Unit 2:Nursing persons with cancer, Unit 3: nursing the patient experiencing a terminal illness Unit 4: Nursing the patient in the acute hospital setting.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:Discuss the epidemiology of cancer in Ireland and outline the treatment modalities available to persons with cancerDiscuss the relevant aspects of nursing assessment and management of persons undergoing treatment for cancer. Discuss the epidemiology of chronic illnessDiscuss the relevant aspects of holistic nursing assessment of persons with a chronic illness and discuss aspects of individualised care planning and evaluation for persons with a chronic illnessDiscuss the principles of rehabilitation and palliative care and outline the range and types of rehabilitative and palliative care services available in Ireland. demonstrate skills of assessing the acutely ill patient in hospital. dicuss the importance of communication with the multidisplinary team on an acute general ward
