This module aims to introduce the student to the knowledge and skills underpinning the nursing care of persons experiencing changes in health status in Neurological and Musculoskeletal function

Learning Outcomes:

Discuss the systematic and comprehensive focused assessment of a patient with impaired neurological and musculoskeletal function and associated diagnostic tests

Discuss the pathophysiological processes and consequences of impaired neurological and musculoskeletal function

Appraise the role of the nurse in identifying and reducing risk factors, anticipating potential complications and promotion of healthy lifestyle in patients with neurological/musculoskeletal dysfunction

Develop nursing care plans for patients with neurological/musculoskeletal dysfunction using NANDA, NIC and NOC, (including medications)

Identify the common psychosocial needs and related nursing interventions for a patient experiencing neurological and musculoskeletal problems

Indicative Module Content:

Unit 1 Musculoskeletal
Revision of musculoskeletal system and bone healing following a fracture
Nursing management in the assessment & prevention of potential complications for patients with musculoskeletal trauma: acute compartment syndrome, VTE, infection, hemorrhagic shock
Nursing assessment and management of patients with fracture immobilisation
Nursing assessment and management of a patient with fractures and lower limb amputation
Nursing assessment and management of a patient with osteoarthritis and inflammatory musculoskeletal conditions
Nursing and management and management of the patient with joint arthroplasty

Unit 2 Neurological
Revision of neurological system, altered consciousness, impaired neurological function
Compare and contrast the aetiology, pathophysiology, and clinical signs/symptoms of persons experiencing altered neurological function
Neurological assessment, nursing care planning, functional and cognitive assessment
Management of persons with traumatic injuries, head injury/Spinal Injury
Nursing assessment and management of patients with Dementia
Nursing assessment and management of patients with Stroke
Nursing assessment and management of patients with Epilepsy
Nursing assessment and management of patients with Multiple Sclerosis
Nursing assessment and management of patients with Parkinson’s Disease
Nursing assessment and management of patients with Cerebral Bleeds; Meningitis, Brain Tumour / Brain Haemorrhage
