On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
• Attain predetermined standards and demonstrate psychomotor and interpersonal skills related to the domains of competence for Stage 1 mental health nursing students
• Identify key ethical and professional issues related to care of the service user
• Identify and discuss the elements of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of psychiatric nursing care and how care is organised and managed
• Identify strengths and weaknesses of personal communication techniques and apply professional communication skills to practice
• Identify strategies to enhance own clinical learning
Contact with service users in any of a diverse range of health care settings
Supervision in clinical practice
Observation and engagement with service users including building rapport, utilising communication skills, practice of nursing interventions under supervision
Learning through doing, reflection and feedback from clinical nurses/preceptors/ multidisciplinary team and nurse practice development team members
Learning about care planning, reporting, handover, documentation

Students will have set meetings with their preceptor to establish a learning plan and goals to be met against specific domains and standards and then to evaluate progress against these standards. Feedback will be provided by the preceptor and/or team and via the Clinical Placement Coordinator and documented in the student's portfolio of evidence the National Clinical Assessment Document (NCAD).
