MUS50010 Seminar in Musicology 1

Academic Year 2021/2022

This module is offered for Musicology PhD students. The seminar provides an important opportunity for research students to engage with the major debates, topics and currents in contemporary musicological discource, particularly in the musicological disciplines encompassed in the School of Music: ethnomusicology and historical or cultural musicology.

PhD students are expected to attend all seminars over the course of the trimester. The seminars are the one regular occasion when the full scholarly community of the school gathers together and are an essential dimension of school life. Students are strongly encouraged to engage in the discussions that follow each seminar paper.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this module students should have a greater awareness of:
- important currents in musicology today
- specific debates in discrete areas of the discipline
- a sense of the interactions and the potential for interaction between analysis, ethnomusicology and historical and cultural musicology
- current research beyond the confines of their own doctoral research

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
There will be five guest seminars in all. The first meeting with students shall be to discuss some core reading as preparation for the takes and each guest shall provide a preparatory text to be discussed in the intervening weeks. The guest seminars themselves shall consist of a recorded talk played synchronously according to the timetable, followed by a live discussion on Zoom, both of which are open to a public audience.
