Information systems are an integral part of all business activities and careers. This course is designed to introduce students to contemporary information systems and demonstrate how these systems are used throughout global organisations. The focus of this module will be on the key components of information systems - people, software, hardware, data, and communication technologies, and how these components can be integrated and managed to create competitive advantage. Through the knowledge of how IS provides a competitive advantage, students will gain an understanding of how information is used in organisations and how IT enables improvement in quality, speed, and agility.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students will be able to :
Understand the concept of information and describe how and why information systems are used today, including the technological, human resources, and organisational components of information systems.
Understand how businesses are using information systems for competitive advantage and because of competitive necessity.
Be aware of emerging technologies that enable new forms of communication, collaboration, and partnering, including providing stronger relationships with customers and suppliers.
Be aware of the ethical concerns that information systems raise in society and how to how to mitigate risks arising from the use of information technology.
Be able to distinguish between the use of information technology for the practical information flow between organisations to support transactions and use of information systems to support the decision making at different levels in the organisation.

Gathering business intelligence and financial data using the Financial Times (ft.com)
Enterprise Resource Planning systems using SAP and Microsoft Dynamics

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module is based largely on practical work, building skills using current business technology tools.
Also, students will research technology trends and events using readings assigned, mainly from UCD's Financial Times online subscription.
Assessment is based on in-class activities and assigned reports.
