MEEN30090 Materials Science and Engineering II

Academic Year 2023/2024

Materials Science and Engineering II is an intermediate level materials module that will cover basic principles and methods of physical and process metallurgy focusing on the ways to strengthen / soften ferrous (Low carbon and stainless steels) and non-ferrous alloys (Titanium, Aluminium, Magnesium and Superalloys). This module will also cover significant metal degradation processes: corrosion and creep, as well as treatments / processes such as thermal treatments, surface hardening and welding that have crucial effect on the structure and properties of metals.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Describe the effects of treatments and processes on the microstructure and properties of low carbon steels
2. Explain the major forms of corrosion and the environment which they occur
3. Select suitable welding processes in manufacturing
4. Analyse creep mechanisms of materials and design for creep resistance
5. Specify appropriate materials where sustainability is a major criterion for a given application from a range of non-ferrous alloys
