MEEN20060 Mechanical Engineering Design I

Academic Year 2023/2024

This module covers a wide range of mechanical engineering design subjects, including technical drawing, free-hand sketching, Computer Aided Design and machine component and system design. Each week during the trimester, students will work on individual or group homework assignments consisting of sketching, CAD, and design tasks. Weekly practical sessions serve as "office hours" where students can get advice and feedback on the assignments.

Module Syllabus - specific topics:
1. Computer aided design and drafting
2. Technical drawings
3. Tolerances, limits and fits
4. Linkages
5. Gears and other transmissions
6. Motors
7. Friction and bearings
8. Structural elements

Learning Outcomes:

1. Use international technical specification standards to produce detailed 1st and 3rd angle projection drawings of components and assemblies. Recognise and use correct drafting symbols and methods. Specify limits and fits and also geometric tolerances.
2. Design and draw machine components such as bolts, springs, seals, bearings and gears.
3. Use computer aided design software to create and improve components and products.
4. Design mechanical transmission systems.
5. Develop design solutions to general problems of a mechanical nature.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Lectures will cover fundamental mechanical topics and will include in-class exercises and activities.
Worked examples of mechanical design problems will be provided to support self-directed study by students.
Frequent homework assignments will require students to apply their knowledge to design activities throughout the module.
Weekly "office hours" will provide opportunities for students to get advice and feedback on their homework.
