MDSA30050 Respiratory Disease

This module is part of the core curriculum for the MB BCh BAO degree in medicine. It introduces the student to the underlying pathological and microbiological processes that result in respiratory tract disease and relates these processes to the clinical manifestations of respiratory disease in the patient. The module also introduces the current pharmacological and immunological agents that are used in the treatment and prevention of respiratory disease.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the module students will have improved their clinical skills by (a) identifying the common diseases of the respiratory tract, (b) identifying the presenting clinical features of patients with respiratory disease and (c) interpreting laboratory data utilised in the diagnosis of patients with respiratory disease. Students will also have improved their biomedical knowledge by describing the pathological and microbiological processes underlying respiratory disease and their associated clinical features, formulating appropriate treatment regimens and suggesting preventative measures that may be used in the management of these diseases. The module also enables students to improve their professional and interpersonal skills by participation in group-based interactive tutorials.

Learning Requirements:

Students are required to have a background in human physiology and biochemistry and to have studied the Systems 1 modules (such as MDSA10100) or Mechanisms of Disease [MED] (MDSA30080/PATH30080) or a module with equivalent learning outcomes. This elective is only available to Health Science students.

Learning Recommendations:

It is strongly recommended that students who wish to take this as an elective module must contact the module coordinator to discuss necessary requirements before registering.
