MATH40750 Financial Work Placement

Academic Year 2021/2022

This is a graduate level research project in financial mathematics. The student will have the opportunity to engage with a significant project in financial mathematics at a host financial firm, as part of a summer work placement. They are expected to write a dissertation giving an original exposition of the topic which demonstrates an in-depth mastery of its theoretical and/or applied elements, and an understanding of its relevance and applicability to real world scenarios. The project will be completed under the co-supervision of a member of the host firm and a member of the UCD School of Mathematics and Statistics. Registration to this module is subject to an interview process with potential host firms and a sufficiently high performance in Autumn Trimester modules.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of the module students will have:
1. gained an in-depth knowledge of a particular topic in financial mathematics;
2. written a dissertation on the topic demonstrating critical judgement and evaluation skills of theoretical and/or applied financial mathematical techniques;
3. given an oral presentation communicating the key elements of the dissertation to a broadly mathematically literate audience.

Students can take this module subject to the approval of the Programme Director and host firm (sufficiently high GPA in autumn trimester and interview process).
