LAT30130 Livy and the Origins of Rome

Academic Year 2016/2017

This module focuses on Livy History of Rome Book 1, which deals with the early history of Rome from its mythic foundations to the last of the kings and the foundation of the Republic. Lectures will focus on the question of what Livy's stories can tell us about Roman ideas about their past and the politics of Roman identity in the Augustan era. Tutorials will allow students to develop their translation skills and their understanding of Latin through detailed reading of the text.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:- Understand and analyze the prescribed text in its historical and literary context; evaluate modern interpretations of the work; develop reading skills in Latin; produce well-argued written work which engages with the Latin text.
