LAT10110 Beginners' Latin 1

Academic Year 2013/2014

From Harry Potter to the Pope, in modern day law and medicine, Latin has a long history as a language of power and arcane knowledge. It is also hugely influential on the linguistic development of later European languages. This module introduces students to the study of the Latin language, setting it in the context of ancient Roman culture. The fundamental rules of Latin and English grammar will be explained, and students will learn to read and translate passages adapted from great ancient authors such as Cicero and Virgil. The textbook used is Norman Goldman, Latin Via Ovid (1982). This is a fast paced and intensive course that can be taken as the first step in your study of Latin or as a stand-alone module to develop your understanding of ancient Rome and the linguistic roots of modern European languages such as English, French, Italian and Spanish.
