Academic Year 2020/2021

This module is an introduction to the Latin language aimed at beginners who want to develop their language skills and their knowledge of Roman culture. We will explore aspects of Roman myth and history by reading excerpts from Roman texts in the original Latin. You will learn elementary Latin grammar and syntax, and develop your understanding of principles of grammar and the Latin roots of the English language. The textbook is:

G.D.A. Sharpley, The Complete Latin Course, 2nd edition. Taylor & Francis, 2014.

The textbook is supplemented by interactive learning games and activities on Brightspace.

There are some places available for elective students, international students and postgraduates. The module is not open to students with Leaving Cert Latin or equivalent: if you have previously studied Latin, contact the module coordinator for advice.
