LARC40580 MLA Studio 2A

Academic Year 2023/2024

This studio focuses on site analysis, planning strategies and spatial design, and provides the student with an opportunity to explore, in depth, the relationship between planning, urban design and landscape architecture, in the context of a single trimester-long project. The project is set up to mimic aspects of professional practice. The project will be located on a site in Ireland. The studio builds on the skills learnt in the earlier stages of the degree programme and the student is expected to synthesise a range of design skills, ideas and solutions.
Students study a rural or urban area, examining the notion of cycles of change in land use, the history and character of the site, opportunities created by the flux of activity and resulting transience and temporariness, as well as more 'permanent' design solutions. A range of scales are used to develop a complete set of drawings for the project. The trimester ends with the submission of a portfolio and an exhibition of the students' work.

Learning Outcomes:

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the module students should be able to:
1. Measure and abstract a framed view from an enclosed lived space to a garden space (examine inside to outside relationships)
2. Justify the redesign of an open space, rural or urban, to increase its potential as a sustainable and resilient landscape project and compare to European/UK precedent
3. Appraise topographic information and redesign the green infrastructure of an existing place, its topography and hinterlands
4. Categorise the landscapes and prepare a transect of the area from core to hinterland.
5. Evaluate threats to a place (sea-rise, dumping, maintenance, biodiversity, vacancy, invasive species) and propose mitigating strategies
6. Design the interconnection spatially between three strategic points in this landscape and draft changes to current policy as a result.
7. Demonstrate the ability to communicate, discuss, critique and reflect on your own work, the work of your peers and to participate with a community.

Feedback Strategy/Strategies

• Feedback individually to students, on an activity or draft prior to summative assessment
• Feedback individually to students, post-assessment

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

The module is assessed across typically four 'work stages', with each one requiring a verbal presentation as well as the production of various types of drawings and models. Assessment is by a panel of typically three tutors and/or invited external landscape architects or other experts. Marks are assigned on the day of the presentation. Feedback is available individually normally within one week of each presentation with the exception of the final presentation. The final presentation typically takes the form of an exhibition on a date agreed with students on the first week after the end of formal teaching. A hard copy bound thesis document and digital copy is also required to be handed in prior to the External Examiner's visit.
