LARC30150 Landscape Studio 3 A

Academic Year 2023/2024

The module encourages an approach to construction detailing for designed landscape which is integrated with the creative design process. Drawing exercises focus on exploration of materials, setting out and construction detailing. The emphasis is on integration of function, form, making and materials. Students are expected to state their intentions, explore the physical attributes of selected materials, and demonstrate the coherence of their proposals. The overall theme may involve subject matter such as carbon sequestration and other issues related to sustainability in landscape architecture practice.

Work stages may include both group and individual work. A joint project of a duration of approximately two/three weeks may be offered with students of civil/structural engineering. Interim submission requirements assist the students in planning their work, but students are expected to work in an increasingly independent fashion in this studio (compared to Stage 1 and Stage 2 learning), to question, test and develop their own work using appropriate representational means.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should be able to demonstrate (i) ability to develop and critique projects in an individual and group setting (ii) ability to analyse and represent site context (iii) understanding of the influence of site constraints on design development (iv) ability to design and represent appropriate detailed design interventions in a given context (v) understanding of issues concerning appropriate choice and use of materials (vi) ability to research appropriate subject matter and physical materials relatively independently and to use such research in support of design (vii) improved familiarity with the physical attributes of materials (viii) ability to work and think independently, and to make choices when confronted with conflicting information or advice.

Feedback Strategy/Strategies

• Feedback individually to students, on an activity or draft prior to summative assessment
• Group/class feedback, post-assessment
• Peer review activities

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

The module is studio and site based (where possible/appropriate) and involves drawing, model making (if required), processing of sample materials and sometimes construction of sample materials outdoors on campus, therefore it is subdivided into several 'work stages' across the semester. These are assessed on the due date (at the 'crit') and feedback is given on the day of the crit. Additionally, a joint, group activity may be included with engineering students, during a period of approximately two/three weeks. This activity is assessed separately by teaching staff from landscape architecture and engineering.
