LARC10120 Plants&Landscape Architecture

Academic Year 2020/2021

Plant knowledge and the ability to select and incorporate plants into the design process is fundamental to landscape architecture practice. This module provides an introduction to a range of topics related to plants and planting design. Via site visits, students are brought into contact with a range of designed landscapes and given an overview of plant categories, plant classification and basic botanical principles to assist in plant identification. Students are introduced to the basic horticultural practices of plant propagation as well as ecological issues relating to planting design and the implementation of planting schemes. This module includes regular plant identification tests.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this module students will be;
1. Familiar with the main planting categories used by landscape architects in the planning, design and management of landscape projects.
2. Have the basic tools to help them identify the main plants groups used in practice.
3. Understand how landscape architects engage with plants from the site survey stage through to design implementation.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
For 2020 this module delivered by blended learning and a combination of use of the virtual classroom and face to face activities. The course will be divided into a series of learning units with supporting on-line interactive engagement, pre-recorded material and face-to-face tuition.
