LARC10110 Understanding Landscape I

This 5-credit module helps develop an understanding of issues associated with the landscape. This course is delivered by "face-to-face teaching, supported by online material using the Virtual classroom. Assessment and feedback will be conducted online. The content introduces “landscape” as a concept and analyses its various definitions and meanings. The module considers historic, contemporary and possible future values that society places on its landscape.The physical, biological and cultural aspects of landscape are explored with students introduced to the forces that shape our surroundings and drive change. The module is directed at landscape architects and planners: two disciplines that act as agents of change.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this module students will:
1. Recognise that the term “landscape” carries a multiplicity of meanings and is used by a range of disciplines;
2. Understand the environmental and cultural processes that have shaped the Irish landscape;
3. Be able to consider a particular landscape and identify the environmental forces and cultural activities that have shaped it.
4. Understand why landscape is emerging as an area of interest for environmental policy makers, academics and the general public and why landscape change can be a contentious issue.
