LANG40590 The English Language for TESOL

Academic Year 2023/2024

This module aims to provide practitioners with the linguistic knowledge and analytical skills they will need in order to teach the English language system in terms of sounds, words, grammar and discourse. Participants will develop their ability to use linguistic description accurately and appropriately, to identify systemic differences in languages, and to select appropriate linguistic content for learners. They will also begin to consider how learners' language can be analysed to understand their language development. Reference will be made throughout to Insights on language systems which have been developed through the collection of language corpora.

Learning Outcomes:

Successful candidates will demonstrate:
detailed knowledge and understanding of the English language system (grammar, phonology, lexis and discourse)
an ability to recognise, understand and use appropriate concepts and terminology to describe features of the English language in the TESOL classroom
an ability to reflect critically on the language they use and teach in the classroom
an ability to recognise some of the significant systemic differences between English and a specific language, and identify implications for the learner
an ability to use digital tools to investigate language corpora
an understanding discourse analysis tools to the evaluation of TESOL materials, classroom discourse and the wider context
be able to analyse the characteristics of different types of learner language
