IS30070 Cybersociety? Technology, Culture and Communication

Academic Year 2017/2018

The module examines anthropological perspectives on information and technology, and empirical evidence regarding the impact of new technologies on communities and groups. Topics will include the sociology of information, the impact of social media, global culture, virtual communities, and the transformation of community. Students will conduct empirical research on the impact of new communication technologies (including, but not restricted to, social media) on a specific social group or set of social practices, and use their case study as the basis for discussion in class.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
• Discuss and evaluate the empirical evidence regarding the impact of ICTs on culture and community
• Conduct and critique empirical research on new technologies and social groups and practices.
• Critically summarise debates about new ICTs, globalisation and place.
• Evaluate the overall impact of new social media on individuals, organisations and society.
