IS20170 Data Dilemmas

Academic Year 2023/2024

Data is everywhere. But what exactly is it? How is data created and used? How do we use data to think? And what are the promises and challenges of living and working in a society increasingly based on data processing? How does data enable cutting-edge technologies such as machine learning? This module explores such questions from the perspective of critical data studies. It draws on scholarship from the social sciences and humanities to explore the dilemmas posed by data. Topics include: datafication, the data economy, data work, data science and new emerging techniques for synthesizing data.
