IR10050 Irish for Beginners/Gaeilge do Thosaitheoirí

Academic Year 2023/2024

This is an Irish language module aimed at complete beginners. It is designed for students who have not previously studied Irish and students who have no knowledge of the Irish language or know only a few words and phrases.

This module will be an introduction to the Irish language in which students are required to participate actively and devote time to autonomous learning. Emphasis will be placed on developing the four language skills. At the end of the module students will have mastered the key linguistic elements of level A1 (foundation level 1) of the syllabus developed for the European Certificate in Irish and will be progressing towards acquiring level A2 (foundation level 2). This module is offered by the School of Irish, Celtic Studies and Folklore.

Students may need a laptop and Wifi connection to participate fully in this module.

Learning Outcomes:

- construct short descriptive and narrative written texts to convey basic information related to everyday topics;- communicate in basic everyday interactions;- engage with simple written texts and audio material;- demonstrate a basic knowledge of grammar

Indicative Module Content:

Basic communicative functions: identifying onself by name and place of origin; likewise for other people; speaking about work and hobbies; indicating preferences; describing the weather; and various others as time allows.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Classwork with a tutor, working with written materials and engaging in activities intended to develop speaking ability; listening to audio or film material; engaging with language material online.

Learning Exclusions:

Students who have studied Irish to Junior/Leaving Certificate level, or who have studied the language to a comparable standard, should not take this module and will not be assessed in this module.
