INRL20110 Intro to Middle East Politics

Academic Year 2023/2024

This module introduces students to the emergence of the modern Middle East and key approaches to political life of the region. The first part of the module addresses broad historical background. The second part of the module examines a number of contemporary issues such as political economy, gender , political Islam and regional conflict. The module concludes with an exploration of recent changes in the politics of the region.

Learning Outcomes:

On the successful completion of this module, students should:

- Have an understanding of how the modern Middle East came into existence
- Be familiar with current debates on key themes in the politics of the Middle East
- Have an understanding of contemporary issues in the politics of the Middle East
- Be able to analyse and engage with different approaches to key debates in Middle East politics
