IDIS00020 Digital Literacy

Academic Year 2023/2024

This core module will enhance students’ confidence and competence in digital skills. Students will have an
opportunity to develop digital skills required to navigate and use UCD online systems. This includes searching for
information, locating course timetables, accessing the virtual learning environment and using appropriate software
and applications to enhance their learning. Students will be introduced to a range of UCD licensed software including
Microsoft Office and bibliographic software.
Students will develop a critical approach to sourcing and evaluating appropriate material and approaches to support
their study. Teaching will be in small group settings. Students should bring a laptop/tablet, if available. Assessment
is continuous and will include demonstration of practical applications of key skills and a final group presentation.

Learning Outcomes: on completion of this modules students should be able to:

1. Download and use appropriate software required to study in higher education
2. Navigate the UCD systems effectively – SISWeb, UCDConnect, e-mail, calendar and Bright Space Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)
3. Access and apply learning materials and resources from the vle to support learning
4. Use multi-media resources to create content, including posters and videos
5. Design, structure and deliver a presentation
6. Use social media for learning and peer engagement

Learning Recommendations:

It is recommended that students attend additional supporting workshops, that they use the additional resources offered on BrightSpace and that they avail of the Open Door policy and on-going guidance and support available in the Access & Lifelong Learning Centre.
