OVERVIEW

This module will introduce students to the concept of Social Entrepreneurship, a rapidly growing sector that is focused on the development and implementation of solutions that address social and environmental issues. The overall aims of this module are to help students understand the characteristics that define a social enterprise; identify problem areas and contexts within which social enterprises are launched; develop ideas for potential social ventures; consider how to evaluate the impact of social enterprises, and to be able to investigate how their own specific interests and existing discipline-specific knowledge can be applied in this sector.

Days in this module are varied; they often include conversations with guest social entrepreneurs, hands-on activities and immersive challenges, and class discussions. Throughout the module, students will develop a variety of skills (e.g. creativity, communication, problem-solving, teamwork) that are increasingly sought by employers.

In short, students will be provided with a toolkit and the mindset to create a better tomorrow.



MODE OF DELIVERY: This module is delivered entirely online in a "Live Online" format.

"Live online" is a highly interactive and dynamic approach to online learning consisting of class discussions, breakout rooms, mini-breaks and team activities and projects throughout the week.

You must be available to attend and participate 9.30am-4.30pm every day of the module and complete any pre-module tasks and post-module deliverables.



UCD INNOVATION ACADEMY

At the UCD Innovation Academy, we are Educator Practitioners with extensive real-world experience as academics, business and social entrepreneurs, tech thinkers, creative professionals and design thinking practitioners.

Our teaching is grounded in academic rigour. Our focus is on ‘learning by doing’ in a real-world context. Classes include a combination of individual and team tasks and activities, along with discussions, presentations and reflection.

Enrolment on an Innovation Academy module means a commitment to active participation and engagement, which necessitates attendance at all scheduled classes.

Note:
Class Size : We limit our class size to 36 students or less. We require a minimum of 16 participants to ensure enough people for teamwork and a dynamic classroom environment. On very rare occasions, if fewer than 16 registered students register, we will offer students the opportunity to join another class.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of the module, participants should be able to:

• Explore social entrepreneurship and the variety of contexts within which social ventures are launched
• Critically evaluate and assess the motivational drivers and decision-making processes behind the development of social ventures
• Examine the potential for social ventures in relation to one’s discipline or specific interests
• Learn how to design and launch social ventures by combining skills in creativity, innovation and entrepreneurial thinking
• Develop an understanding of how social ventures can be evaluated

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
All Innovation Academy modules take a 'learning by doing' approach, combining individual, and group activities and tasks including presentations, discussion and reflection. Guest speakers will share their own experiences and lessons learnt.
