HUM10030 Introduction to Arts

This module provides students with an opportunity to identify and develop the skills and resources which will maximize their success at university. The purpose of this module is to facilitate students in achieving the highest grades possible across their modules in Arts and Humanities. The module aims include developing an understanding of university expectations, enhancing academic skills, and developing an understanding of the different learning and assessment practices used in a University. Specific topics covered include critical thinking, academic writing skills, effective reading and note-taking. A number of short written and online assignments are completed over the course of the module.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the module you will have:
Identify the basic skills underlying the study of Arts/humanities
Take concise, accurate notes
Identify and define an essay topic or theme
Select and find relevant written and internet sources for the exploration of that theme
Utilise citation systems
Master different forms of assessment
Define, identify and avoid plagiarism
Organize a communicative essay
Manage time more effectively
Process information effectively
Think critically
Control learning strategies
Understand learning outcomes
Begin to develop a learning portfolio
Apply Metacognition to their learning
